Test Summary

Abstract reasoning is the ability to quickly reason with information and solve new problems. It incorporates the capacity to understand logical sequences, discover relationships between shapes, patterns, or images, determine the underlying rules in a sequence, and then apply them to solve a problem.

The current test is designed to assess a candidate's capacity to quickly reason with information to solve unfamiliar problems. It includes abstract reasoning questions in which they must establish the relationship between shapes, patterns, or objects, and determine the underlying rules that connect them.

The test is timed and in a multiple-choice format.

Test Outcomes

This test could help identify candidates who may be able to:

  • Learn new information and acquire new skills.
  • Form new strategies and solve new problems on a regular basis.
  • Use logic to extrapolate rules or relationships to other possible work-related scenarios.
  • Process and analyse new data in a logical manner.

Test Measurement Areas

Angles

This section includes 10 exercises meant to assess a candidate's ability to recognise patterns in a sequence, objects and their attributes (number, colour, shape, size, orientation), and determine how objects rotate at different angles (45° and 90°) in different directions.

Inversion and Translation

This section includes 10 exercises meant to assess a candidate's ability to recognise patterns in a sequence, objects and their attributes, and determine how objects invert their position, order, form, or relationship, and how they move a set distance in a direction.

Rotation and Alternation

This section includes 10 exercises meant to assess a candidate's ability to recognise patterns in a sequence, objects and their attributes, and determine how objects rotate (clockwise or counterclockwise), move vertically or horizontally or top to bottom.

Why Measure Abstract Reasoning?

In the workplace, paying attention to detail is a valuable skill because people who pay close attention to detail are more likely to make fewer mistakes and require less supervision and error correction. Potential employers can use attention to detail tests to screen candidates that may be a good fit for roles that require them to read and analyse large amounts of written text, graphical or numerical data, which would require effective error detection and attention to detail.
