Test Summary

Critical thinking is about people’s ability to think rationally about a topic. It is specifically about their ability to analyse information, whether in textual, numerical, or graphical form, and make logical connections between ideas, drawing reliable and confident conclusions.

The current test is designed to assess a candidate's capacity to think critically across three key sections which are based on a well-researched and validated model as a common standard test for measuring critical thinking skills: the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) measure.

  • Recognising Assumptions - This part includes questions designed to assess a candidate's capacity to analyse statements, understand what is being said, evaluate whether or not the information offered is valid, and whether or not evidence has been provided to back it up.
  • Evaluating Arguments - This part includes questions designed to assess a candidate's capacity to analyse arguments and decide on their weakness or strength. It involves a thorough examination of all relevant facts, rather than seeking information that confirms a preferred point of view.
  • Drawing Conclusions - This part includes questions designed to assess a candidate’s capacity to analyse information and reach a logical, reliable or sound conclusion (or inference), and determine whether or not the conclusions (or inferences) may be drawn with confidence.

The test is timed and in a multiple-choice format.

Test Outcomes

This test could help identify candidates who may be able to:

  • Look for logical connections between ideas.
  • Determine the significance and relevance of ideas and arguments.
  • Detect contradictions, inconsistencies, and reasoning errors.
  • Question rather than accept arguments and conclusions presented to understand the evidence provided.
  • Consider alternative interpretations of information and evaluate the strength of arguments presented.

Test Measurement Areas

Assumptions

The capacity to analyse statements and determine if the assumptions underlying them can be supported by the statements or not.

Inferences

The capacity to analyse a source text of information and determine if inferences can be drawn reliably and with confidence.

Evaluation of Arguments

The capacity to analyse statements and determine the strength or validity of the arguments underlying them.

Deductions

The capacity to analyse a source text of information and determine if the drawn conclusions follow logically.

Interpretations

The capacity to analyse a source text of information and determine if the drawn conclusions are true for the text given.

Why Measure Critical Thinking Skills?

The ability to consider information logically and rationally is one of many qualities and attributes associated with critical thinking. A person with strong critical thinking will question and seek to comprehend the evidence supplied rather than embracing the arguments and conclusions presented.

Potential employers may use critical thinking tests to screen candidates that may be a good fit for roles that require them to uncover relationships between concepts, seek alternative interpretations, avoid subconscious bias and opinions, and simply not take information at face value with little or no supporting evidence.
