“Work ethic” refers to the extent to which a person places work at or near the center of their lives, showing the degree to which they believe in the value and importance of work for its own sake. As such, work ethic consists of people’s beliefs and attitudes that pertain to work-related activities in general, and not specific to any particular jobs, that may be reflected in their workplace behaviors.
The present scale assesses a person's work ethic based on validated theories and measures. It consists of four key areas:
1. Work Value - The degree to which an individual views work as a central interest in their life and their tendency to value work for its own sake.
2. Work Ethics - The degree to which a person believes in just and moral principles when it comes to work.
3. Intrinsic Motivation - The degree to which an individual is motivated by the satisfaction and the challenge that work itself brings, rather than by external rewards or pressures.
4. Diligence - The degree to which a person appreciates hard work and using their time productively.
People’s beliefs and opinions about work in general differ. This scale is useful for identifying the degree to which one considers that work is important in itself, that diligence is vital for achieving goals, and that work has a moral benefit, thus guiding one’s behavior. Consequently, the present instrument is focused on work-related attitudes and shows an inclination to appreciate work and an efficient use of time because of their intrinsic value.
